Who should the Detroit Lions pick as there first pick?

A difficult question this is.

The trade they made with Denver makes this pick more difficult. Before the trade I would have said hands down Adrian Peterson since they had absolutely nothing at running back.

I also would have liked them to take Joe Thomas, but since they just aquired George Foster and they pay Backus so much that is not likely to happen. ( Then again it is the lions after all.)

I say they take Jamarcus Russel if he falls to them at number two. In a year or two he could be our starter learning behind Kitna like Carson Palmer did. If Russel is taken first overall then they should either take (sadly) Brady Quinn or Calvin Johnson.

With the 2nd overall pick in the draft it is rumored that the Lions will choose OT Joe Thomas of Wisconsin. Thomas is the highest rated offensive lineman in the draft. Although he may not be the next Orlando Pace, he is the best tackle in any draft since then. He will be a very solid lineman for many years and will start on the OL from day 1 as he is NFL ready now. One of the few picks that by midseason will be established as a consistent player who effectively protects the quarterback. Should be a Pro Bowler in the near future!

This was made extremely complicated by the Dre Bly trade. They got the tackle they needed and got another good back. I think they should trade down a few spots and try to get a couple of first round picks. I'd trade down far enough to where I could get a pick high enough to get Michigan CB Leon Hall (even though a hate Michigan) and still get another 1st round pick or early 2nd round pick. There should be plenty teams out there that want to move up to get Adrian Peterson or Calvin Johnson. If we can't get two good picks for the one, then we should swap first round picks and get a proven CB in return. I don't think Peterson, Quinn, or Johnson are the right needs for this team. In the third or fourth round they should grab a proven winner in Troy Smith. I think he might turn out to be the steal of the draft. As a Lions die-hard, I hope Millen doesn't blow this pick again.

Mike Martz doesnt like first round quarterbacks. Jon Kitna was evaulated by a doctor and is said to have the body of a 28 year old in great physical condition.

The only position at the number 2 pick is Calvin Johnson. I know a wide receiver again but believe me, we need it. Besides Roy Williams all other WR are below average. But since alot of people will complain, we need Joe Thomas, and thats what will be taken

What they should do is get a quarterback. I will never forgive them for passing on Matt Leinert last year. What they will do is pick Calvin Johnson. He will be a stud no matter where he plays with the exception of the Detroit Lions. Fire Millen.

They should trade the pick to the Patriots for there 2 first round picks and if they'll send it a D-Back like Randall Gay or the 3rd round pick... Because then they could fill several holes and could take some Quarterback like Drew Stanton in the 3rd round, if he's there and groom him for the future...
