My sister asked this at the dinner table today and it puzzled me, so anyone that knows: what stops the water from down the chimney when it rains?

is the chimney capped?if its not rain does go in the chimney.

Here in Colorado -nothing, it does go down the chimney. Just usually not enough rain to be a problem.

Probably would put on a rain vent at top of chimney in wetter areas.

In my chimney there is a shield that covers the hole and allows the smoke to go out but the rain not to come in but since I have one I am sure that most chimneys should have them as well

Chimney's have a cap on the top or on the inside just below the top.
