Thank you in advance - please show the work so i can have an understanding of how you got the answer.

-5/6 - (x-1/2)=1/4(x+1)

So far I've got:

-5/6x - x + 1/2 = 1/4x + 1/4

I know - not much...

You have a problem already. The second line should be
-5/6-x+1/2=1/4x+1/4

Now combine the x terms
You get (-5/6)-(3/4)x+1/2=1/4
Now combine the numeric terms
You get (-3/4)x =1/4+5/6-1/2
Fix the right side by going to lowest common denominator (12)
You get (-3/4)x=(3/12+10/12-6/12)=7/12
Now multiply both sides by 4 and divide them by 3 to get x alone
You get x=(28/12)/3=7/9
So x = 7/9

step 1 is to get rid of the parenthesis by using the distributive property: -5/6 - x + 1/2 = 1/4(x) + 1/4
step 2 is to get rid of the fractions by multipying by the least common denominator which is 12: (-5/6 * 12) - 12x + (1/2 * 12) = [ 1/4(x) * 12] + (1/4 * 12)........ -10 - 12x + 6 = 3x + 3
step 3 is to combine like-terms: -4 - 12x = 3x +3
step 4, add 12x to both sides: -4 = 15x + 3
step 5, subtract 3 from both sides: -7 = 15x
step 6, divide 15 from both sides: -7/15 = x
therefore: x = -7/15

-5/6 - (x-1/2)=1/4(x+1)

-5/6 - x + 1/2=1/4x + 1/4

-5/6 - 1/4 + 1/2= 1/4x - x

-7/12 = -3/4 x

-7(4) = -3(12) x
-28 = -36 x
x = 28/36

x = 7/9
