Your tail bone is actually the end of your spinal column; it is called the coccyx. The vertebrae are fused together and it can be very painful if it is hit, or you fall on it; furthermore, it is possible to fracture the coccyx. The pain is worse than the damage, and I have never heard of anything life threatening resulting from a broken or bruised tail bone You might try some OTC analgesics for pain, or if you are uncomfortable with this, you may want to contact your doctor.

Most often, the coccyx (tailbone) is simply bruised. Doesn't make it hurt any less, but it will get better. Occaisionally, the coccyx will actually break. Like any other bone, this requires weeks (3-10) to heal, but generally does. Very, very rarely, the coccyx will have to be removed (coccygectomy). Persistent pain (coccydynia) after injuries, or sometimes for no reason, is a real problem. This can cause pain for many months. The pain can be very difficult to treat.

If you have severe pain after an accident, you need to have it evaluated. A good eval can give you a good idea what to expect in terms of a length of recovery.

Well in men its a big deal the man can get priapisum and that is a huge deal my husband had it and its not caused by anything at all he is a medical mystery there. Now for women (this happens to men as well) you have only one thing that can happen that is abscesses and they are not nice to get trust me. They are large pockets of puss and blood that cant just be removed but can hurt worse then you feel now. When you get them you have to go to the ER or your normal doctor and have them open it up and then you have to have someone pack it with a strip of cloth (the doctors will give you some) and its a messy and painful ordeal. Go to webMD and look up abscesses and you will find out more information on it as well as your tail bone.

Some people never have problems.

I've done that before, I think I either severly bruised it or slightly cracked it. It really hurt for a while but I don't think theres anything you can do about. Mine seems fine now unless i sit slouched down for a longtime then you can still feel a little pain. But other than that i'm good.

You may have fractured it. If it hurts that bad then go get it x-rayed to be sure you didn't fracture your tailbone.

You may have coccyx dislocation or fracture. It causes coccydynia. Visit a surgeon. After examination he/she will offer physiotherapy or rarely surgery (coccygectomy).
