slow?
at times?

what times?
running certain apps or only while running games ?
newer games will kill the speed of an older pc.
over time your pc fills with junk (deleted files, redundant drivers etc) and sometimes a good format and reinstall will make a big difference.
you do not really give enough info to take a stab in the dark at your problem to be honest, there could be a hundred things it COULD be.
running adware/spyware/anti virus progs is a very good base to start from though.

It could be a number of things. You might have too many programs running at once. If you have a lot of icons on the bottom right side of your screen, then those are the culprits. Close them and delete the icon from the startup menu, NOT the start menu. You also might have spyware or a virus. You should run an anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.

One more thing, you might need to install more RAM, depending on which programs you're using.

Never click OK on a popup. Just hit the X in the top right corner.

You've got SpyWare. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry.

Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and go to the startup section. Uncheck the programs that you do not need. Keep your Anti-virus checked

Good luck and Happy Computing!

your computer probly has a virus now this can be dangerous, if you dont do any thing about it, it can spam all your friends computer (if their email is in ur computer) and ur computer can freeze up completly and soooooo much more can happen. Now, you can run a virus scan on your computer (it should be somwhere down in the bottom left corner) this is for when your computer is a little slow but if its really slow and weird things are happening then you need to get it wiped. in order to do that you need to call the company of what ever kind of computer you have. this can cost about 50-80 $

Control panel> performance & maintenance> make sure boxes are ticked for all boxes then free up space on hard drive (important, lose the temporary internet and temporary files)> next task defragment your hard drive from control panel.

Halt system restore from control panel from performance & maintenance. Run spyware and virus detecting software. Kill off any bugs found. Resume system restore.

Control panel> system> Advanced tab> system properties> performance options> Advanced tab> change virtual memory to a higher setting> ok.

Should run abit faster.

I looked in my 'which' free booklet that I got called Easy Use PC guide. (They also do an Internet made easy guide too) Got lots of info, it's advertz'd on tv. 0800 432 0022 and 01992 822800 Head office or enquiries may help!

in there they say;
make a note of software u dont use, then remove it using the start>control panel>add/remove progs;;
or use windows disk cleanup via start>all programs> accessories>system tools and choose disk cleanup. it runs for few moments, then produces a list which could be removed. ticked-box ones are safe to remove., others=u choose remove or no. (Click on category name 2c description, select 'view files' 2c list of files in each category. To remove any of the other categories of file, put a tick in the box next to it, and click OK You get a 'confirm?' msg. Click YES)

you can also 'compress' old files so they take less room on your harddrive. that option is at the bottom of the list!
To organise your hard disk= as u add files to the PC, windows can store them all over the place, and the hard drive has to look for them. (this slows PC) To ease this process- go start>all progs> accessories. system tools>disk defragmenter.
Highlight the drive you want and click 'analyze' a window appears to tell u whether or not defrag is nec. If so click defrag.
**This could take a while, depends on how much defrag there is to do!

Keep your PC up to date. with all the latest changes on Windows XP etc. Microsoft updates to save PC from harmful attacks. Download these off the net. Go start>all progs>accessories> system tools>security centre. check automatic updates is set to ON. If its not click Manage security settings for: AUTO updates at the bottom of the window. Put a tick in the AUTO setting in the new screen that appears.

Control what gets on your computer with the 'firewall' It acts as a border patrol, monitors traffic from the system and blocks the likes of 'hackers'/viruses etc.,

Protect your PC from Spyware and adware by setting the browser to suitable security level. In Internet Explorer, Select TOOLS> Internet options. On BOTH the security and Privacy tabs, make sure the slider is set to MEDIUM or higher. And on the privacy tab, tick the box on the pop-up bit to stop them while you are surfing the web.

Install a spyware removal tool, as I think the first answerer said, get it free from www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware

The article also suggest that we should all defragment our hard disk every month to keep us running smoothly!

Hope this helps!

2 things.
Adjust your virtual memory.
Click on start, click on my computer. Click properties, now click the "advanced" tab, next to performance is settings, click this button.
Click advanced, next to virtual memory click "change". If you have enough room on your hard drive, check the "custom" setting, and set the minimum to 2000 and the max to 2500, now click "set",click ok to close the window, then apply on the next window and click ok, thats a total of 2 1/2 gigs of virtual memory......

Step 2, stop any unnecessary programs from running at startup, like messenger, or whatever you dont want to start.
Click the start button, click on run, and type msconfig. Click on the "startup" button, and uncheck anything you dont want to run. Just dont uncheck anything that says C:\windows, your looking for programs you installed, C:\programs.......

Alternatively try this online benchmarking program, its free to sign up, and if you dont want to, you can still run the program..its free! It will tell you the overall performance of your pc......and what you can benefit from, and what might be wrong...

Hope this helps you out.....you may want to invest in more ram also....
