A microburst is a small area downdraft associated with a thunderstorm. Denser air can no longer be held aloft by the cell and suddenly falls out of the storm usually down the center. It hits the ground and spreads out in all directions as a strong gust front.

There have been some airplane crashes when jets have tried to land in a microburst.

Microbursts are caused when cold dense air falls rapidly from a large cumulus or cumulonimbus cloud and hits the ground, spreading out in all directions.

Rain falling from the cloud evaporates. To do so it needs to take the latent heat of evaporation from somewhere and the surrounding air is the only source. The cooling of the air increases its density and it descends rapidly through the less dense air below. In some microbursts all the rain evaporates on the way down but the microburst continues. These are the most dangerous as they are difficult to see.

A microburst is a very fast burst of air that is forced to the ground when large air masses of diffeerent temperatures move across each other. Winds can be as strong as 100 miles per hours from the quick dowdrafts. Very dangerous and not all that rare.
