Don't know about free ebook, but you can get a free paper copy at your local library.

Why does everyone want something for nothing? It is just as time-consuming for an author to write an ebook as a paper book. Why should they not be entitled to their pay?

No. They're copyrighted. Getting free copies of the e-books would be stealing, just as if you went to a store and nicked them off the shelf. (It's not primarily the paper and ink that you pay for, it's the content.)
