Ok, no, I'm not looking for answers regarding the Flyers ineptness this year (being their worst year in their 40 year history, just the 10th time they've missed the playoffs). I'm also not looking for Giant/Cowboy/Devil/Ranger/Caps/Pens who just have a hatred towards Philly cause of the rivalry. I mean, people who like the AFC in the NFL or the Western Conference. What is it about Philly sports that everyone hates so much? Is it the Santa thing? That was over 30 years ago. Different generation.

WE ARE FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! look, we are intense fans and we like what we like and we hate what we hate. We arent going to be nice to an opposing team. It just doesnt work that way. We take pride in our teams. Even if our teams totally suck, we still love them/ We are die-hards and dont mess with our teams. Thats basically how any TRUE philly team fan thinks.

I am life long Cowboys fan and fan of Dallas pro teams (Mavs, Stars, Rangers, FC, etc...)

I used to hate the Steelers and 49ers...of course I had a mild hatred of the Redskins...but Snyder has made me feel sorry for them....

With the Eagles, I have one friend who is a die-hard Eagle fan and at times I can stomach rooting for them...like when they were in the SB with T.O., I honestly had hoped that the Eagles would win if only so that my friend could experience the joy of a championship...that being said, I hate/despise the Eagles.

Go back the Buddy Ryan bounty on the Cowboys kicker, the many snowball battery incidents at the old stadium. Then the cheering when Irvin went down to an injury...Now I know this is not the sentiment of all the Eagle fans, yet the ones who do have created a sick following. The fact the Philly is the only stadium that has a court on the premises for fans who are out of control...

Then the pure hatred that Eagle fans show towards the Cowboys and their fans...why would I bother trying to show any love for the Eagles?

Then you have an arrogant players in that QB of yours...one of the most over rated QB's of all time.

Then to top it off, the lovefest that the National Media has for the Eagles, while they show an obviousl bias against anything Dallas...Sure I hate/despise the Eagles, The Eagle have done nothing to gain any respect or love from the common fan, let alone the fans of other teams!!!

The fans. The fans. The fans.

I am sure that not every fan of Philly teams are a$$-holes but it just looks that way to anyone watching a game in Philadelphia.
And it is mostly the Eagles.

I know that these incidents happened 10-20 years ago but the sports memory is long and unforgiving:
1) the time Michael Irvin was carried off the field in a stretcher, looking paralyzed, and the fans cheering wildly and throwing debris at him
2) the fact that the city of Philadelphia had to build a jail and a court with an actual judge in the stadium to conduct criminal procedures while Eagles games are played
3) the Santa incident you mentioned; putting batteries in snow balls are not very friendly... I mean its Santa for christ's sake
4) for hockey, people don't like Donald Brashear or Bobby Clarke (not a reason to dislike Philly teams but for some this is enough)

these are just a few reasons... but a big reason I think is because teams like Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Toronto are naturally disliked. Their own newspapers hate their own teams and players. They are jaded sports towns and have extremely high expectations.

The last Philly major sports championship was the 76ers in 1983. Philadelphia has such a high standard for their teams to perform. When they perform substandardly as they have been for the last 24+ yrs, the fans get upset. It's start with the owners and goes down from there. The front office of Philly teams don't stress a championship work ethic to their teams. they play that 'do your best' mentality. That never works nor is it acceptable to the fans. If I was a fanatic of the Flyers and Eagles, I would shut up about the regular season ra-ra they do every year until they win a title. That's what it all boils down to.

Honestly, I'm a Giants, Rangers, Mets fan, and I don't have hatred for Philly, HOWEVER, You guys bring a whole new meaning to "Broadstreet Bullies". I used to go to the old Vet, every year, to watch the Mets play the Phillies. I was completely disrespected by SEVERAL ushers, and Vet employees, who refused to assist me to my seat(every time I went). One even 'cussed me under her breath. A fan sitting next to me asked the usher "How come he gets to sit here?!" I was almost physically attacked coming in, and in the parking lot after the game......WHY???.....because I was wearing a Mets hat!!!!! I got out of both confrontations by telling the fans that the Mets were not a threat(they were in last place on each occassion). HONESTLY, I heard that Eagle fans are ten times worse! New York and Boston fans will not go beyond an obnoxious playful banter....will place you 6 feet under....(depending on how much alcohol they've consumed). I heard that the ONLY Philly team which is "away team friendly", is the arena team Philly SOUL. I had a buddy that played for the Philly Wings.....he told me to stay away!!! The movie "Invincible" is an accurate portrayal of Philly fans....you guys remind me of the gangs from the old "Hell's Kitchen" section of New York......"take a chill, it's only a game!!!!!"

Regarding the flyers specifically:

The team, historically has relied on the "bully" factor way too much. Cheap shots at opposing teams good players have a habit of forming a bad opinion of the team.

The other factor is the fans over the top obnoxious behavior.
Vile, rude, assaultive etc etc etc.

This is a phenomenon which is primarily a North East USA thing.
Fans in the midwest, mid atlantic, western, canadian don't act anything like the troglodytes in Philly.

How can we be nice to an opponent. I mean seriously what kind of fans sympathize with a team that is trying to beat you. Every loss you get takes you farther and farther from the playoffs so why would you not dislike a team who is trying to make you lose and maybe take you out of the playoffs. As for us cheering for a team that loses, id rather my team make it to the playoffs year in and year out, then win a championship one year and suck for years after that. I am a civil philly fan who does have a large knowledge of both hockey and football and i am respectful to other teams, except when gametime comes, then its all just trashtalking to the team that is trying to beat you, and just to let you all know. The Sporting News voted philadelphia the number one hockey city. So stick that in your mouth and chew it. Id rather be dead than not be a philly fan

Well, they did boo Santa once - the fans that is.

When a team is successful, it generates resentment and jealousy from the fans of other teams. So Philly teams are 'hated' because they succeed - just like Dallas teams.

There are just more people out there to do the hating than there are fans.

Support the teams you chose to and ignore everything but blantant lies that other teams' fans throw your way.

The fans. They are so unbearable. Kinda like Florida Gators and LSU fans. But, I like Philly. And yes, the Santa thing was a little weird but it is most likely that the problem is some of those fans up there.

It's a combination of two factors:

Horribly Obnoxious, Rowdy, & Discorteous Fans

- "plus" -

Teams that can't/don't win championships

People could stomach the fans if they were so damn annoying about a winner. And people could tolerate (even pity) the loser city if it's fans had the humbleness you'd expect to accompany such a long run of losing squads.

Bad Philly's got neither - or rather, has the pair. Sadly, there's no solution to the fan problem in the short run. All you guys can do is start winning to start changing peoples feelings towards you.
