My husband is trying to quit and has been using the patch since January 3rd this year. He did great with the first step...then step 2 he had a cigarette thinking he could just have one. Then during step 3 which he is currently on, he's smoked every weekend.
I am curious if there are many people who quit using the patch? He is thinking about trying Chantix...has anyone used that and was successful? Or Zyban? Or the gum? Tell me what you used to quit. Thanks :)

First, no drinking (or other intoxicants) for a month.

Second. Limit the amount of patches he can have. Make it a set amount. Let him know that when the patches are gone then he is off the patch. That way he will only use a patch when he really needs it. Ideally he will have patches left when he discovers he no longer needs them.

Third, no nicotine ever again. He needs to be psychologically ready to give it up.

If he can't do it following these steps then he really does not want to quit and no amount of patches or money will change it.

I quit cold turkey and I DON'T recommend it because I was the most irritable person on the planet for about a month. My co-worker used Zyban and he's been smoke-free for over two years. I'd recommend that over gum or patches.

I have tried to quit using many things in the past. The patch being one. Nicorett and Zyban but with anything and the only thing that worked for me is willpower. It doesn't matter what you use to "help" you quit you still have to have a lot of willpower.

Chantix is an excellent way to quit smoking. Many people have used Chantix successfully with few if any side effects. For more Chantix information, click the following link: http://www.121doc.co.uk/affiliate/scripts/t.php?a_aid=fbb92383&a_bid=&desturl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.121doc.com%2Fchampix.html

I did it with the patch, fifteen years ago. I haven't had a cigarrette since January 1992.
There are newer methods now, but I think motivation and will are essential.
I wish him success. It is not easy at all, I know.
And no, I don't think you can ever have just one again, just like alcoholics. Not one.

I just stopped going on for 2 weeks now and have no urges for a cig.
My father tried nicorette. Now he's addicted to the gum and the cigs.

I used Hypnosis, the number one rule is that THE PERSON HAS TO WANT TO QUIT, until that happens they are not going to.
