Okay let me be clear that in the past I have been a BIG fan of James Herbert and have read all of his books. However I decided today to make The Secret of Crickley Hall the last of his books that I will read as I feel he is past his peak.

I think it's more a case of you moving on and your tastes evolving than James Herbert passing his peak. Maybe best to move on and let it go.

I have to agree with you, for me, James Herbert was left in the past long ago.

Many many moons ago, I read everything Dennis Wheatley wrote, that was before I discovered James Herbert. After many years of reading James Herbert, I discovered Stephen King.

I thought each new author brought something new to the horror or supernatural stakes, and I was very happy with Stephen King.

Then I discovered Dean Koontz!

His very varied subjects and portrayals just seem to leave all the others behind. I did try to read another James Herbert book (it speaks for itself that I can't even remember the title), I'm afraid after reading Dean Koontz he spoils it for all the other authors for me.

He can blend the horror into a plot with such ease, and can even add humour at the most serious times. I don't think there will be another author who can replace Koontz' as my first choice.

you can't decide with one book that the author has reached his peak you may be suprised that some people think he is still going to the top with his work .Wait for his new book then say enough is enough .
