your settings may be like that, on you laptop you will have the 'fn' button which is next to the window or the ctrl key. press and hold that and on the buttons f1, f2, etc you will have a brightness symbol in a different colour to the text 'f1' etc, press and hold fn and try pressing them, see if it works..

It may be your backlight or your inverter. They both display the screen properly. Hook it up to an external monitor to verify if it is bad.

Sometimes it is a simple as what angle you view the screen at. Try moving the top of the screen forwards or backwards and you will find it alters the image you see quite a lot.

If it is dark and it is not plugged in it is because of the engry saver system. If it is plugged in and still dark and you have tried the brightness controls go in to the display setting and try to agjust them. If that does not work then send it in for repairs.

sounds like the back light has gone. Their is a very very high voltage "bulb running round the periphary of your screen, DO NOT TAKE THIS APART!!! You will get an electric shock that would kill you if you dont know what you are doing!!
PC World can change it for you.
