All of the comments about a starter for your light might be right, if your light has a starter. If your fluorescent light has a ballasts you will not have a starter. A bad ballasts can cause your bulbs to work sometimes and not work at other times. If it is a ballasts shaking it wont help.
Some times it is easier to replace the whole light then repair it.

You may just need to reinstall making sure all four pins are lined up correctly, it's easy to get them "catawampus". If it's an older fixture it may have a bad starter, an aluminum fuse looking thing located behind the bulb. If that doesn't fix it you may have a bad ballast and replacing them often costs more than a new lamp. RScott

If you examine the side of the light fitting you will see a protrusion. Take hold of this and twist it. It will come loose and can be withdrawn. This is called a starter. Take it to your local DIY shop and buy a new one (EXACTLY LIKE THE OLD ONE). Replace it in the light fitting and all will be well.
