the pick up is a 1999 chevy S-10 4.3L automatic trans and it has the electronic changer from 4wd to 2wd. It runs fine in city driving conditions, but everytime i get on the freeway and lets say i exceed 60 mph for like 10 minutes or so, the truck kicks really bad when i get off the freeway. This happens when i go from 1st gear to 2nd gear. Once i let the truck cool down for a couple hours it works fine again. Does the whole transmission have to be placed to fix this problem?

I own a transmission shop, and work on these a lot. If I'm understanding you here, it has a very hard 1-2 shift, as in shifts with a bang? I wouldn't think the whole tranny needs rebuilt, but it does sound like a broke accumulator spring, a bad throttle position sensor, or a problem with the TV cable either out of adjustment, loose, or broken. It could even be a problem with the torque converter staying in lock up, not disengaging, and then disengaging all of a sudden. A couple of things I would do is; make sure you are full of fluid, and go to a parts store (Advance Auto Parts) and purchase a bottle of some stuff called "Lubegard" and put it in the tranny. I call this stuff rebuild in a bottle, because it is in fact that good. A little on the expensive side, but well worth it. If after a day or two it doesn't go to working right, then you will need to have a shop check it out for the broke spring, and or other problems. I have even seen a sticking u-joint do this, so it is important to have it checked out before it does more damage.
Part 2:
Deltech is assuming it is staying in lock-up because the TCC switch/valve is bad, but if it were bad the engine would want to stall when you stopped for a traffic light because lock-up is nothing more than direct drive. It is like stopping a straight drive vehicle without pushing the clutch down, it will stall. I don't think this is what you are saying, and this would in NO way have anything to do with the 1-2 shift. Does this kick happen on the down shift, or the up shift? Don't matter! Sticking valve in the valve body, and its usually caused by the build up of varnish in the valves. Try the Lubegard, you will see what I mean.
Glad to help out, Good luck!!!

Ck to see if there is a P-1870 code stored in the pcm,if so the T-conv is probably slippng due to a worn tcc reg valve in V-body.the V-body can be fixed with out removing the trans, but it will cost somewhere around 450.00 to have it done.

once you had the pan off you ought to have replaced the filter out. the filter out is likely your issue. if the filter out receives too dirty then the pump has a confusing time choosing up the fluid. i say replace the fluid and filter out yet don,t flush it. it,s going to slip if the pump can,t %. up the fluid quick sufficient.
