Perhaps they had argument over who did the most work and decided not to speak until an apology was made.

like he said unplug the printers from the usb or parralle and the power for 60-120 sec or 1-2 mins restart the computer then pluge the printer while the computer is on and booted up should hear the xp make that noise and it should ask where the drivers are or install them auto if that dose not work then unplug it again and download hte drivers from the makers site like hp is www.hp.com or comaq is www.hp.com lexmark.com and so on then once drivers are installed then plug back in

Make sure printer is switched on.
Otherwise turn off both unplug at mains - check all connections, replug and restart computer and switch on the printer.

Unplug the power cord for 30 seconds then plug it back in. That should work. If not, reinstall the CD ROM, the Printer CD...

check all wires and stuff...if it still does that, then restart ur computer and printer.
