Our baby has acid reflux, our doc put him on Regulan, Zantac, and told us to mix rice cereal in with the formula. Only problem is the combination of rice and regulan puts him to sleep, and we have a hard time keeping him awake long enough to feed. The doc said to lower the room temp a few degrees and we "just have to teach him to eat". We do tapping, talking, rubbing, ect. nothing keeps him awake for more then a few seconds. Any other ideas?

Try feeding him when he first wakes up, then maybe he won't be so sleepy.

This is not normal...they really should do some testing to see why he is so low on energy that he would fall asleep so easily. Also, my daughter has reflux and the first thing we were told was to thicken her bottles with rice formula which made her choke and got caught in the nipples. Try "Thick-it"...it is made for this sort of thing and can be found at drug stores.

I would be alarmed at this personally, as it could point to potential heart problems if the baby can't exert itself enough to feed properly. Please see another doctor and make sure to include ALL pertinent info regarding the reflux, meds, and symptoms during feedings.

Best of luck!

Keep a baby wipe close, its wet and cold so when he looks like he is about to fall asleep, touch his face with the wipe. It should jolt him awake enough to finish feeding.

My niece had a hard time staying awake during her feedings. We ended up having to strip her down right to her diaper - which made her uncomfortable, but allowed her to stay awake to feed.

is the baby falling asleep after feeds or is the baby "passing out" that is unconscious? there is a big difference. if your baby is passing out as in unconscious during feeds, this means that your baby is failing a stress test. feeding for babies is considered a 'stress test" like you would have if you have heart problems. get ur baby checked for congenital heart disease asap.

sometimes it helps to do a more frequent feeding , like every 2 hrs, instead of 4 hrs.

How about relactating? Then you can probably get rid of the meds altogether.

sit him up more, gently bounce him (unless that worsens the reflux), don't let him get snuggly until after he eats, have him only wear a diaper to eat.........

be patient
