It's the stupidest thing. Personally (and my friends would agree), I think people who get offended by it are stupid.. I use the n word to address all men.. I also use the b word to address all women. That's my way. Everyone who knows me, knows what I'm about. But others have been offended. It's something from the past that some people still get offended on. It is a double standard and that's why the ones who get offended should get over themselves. That's in the past!

Yes, it's a double standard, and it's going by the way-side. Be careful, though- not ALL black people use that word, even with each other.

It's a derogatory term no matter who uses it, but some black people use it to be "cool". Now days some black people don't find it offensive to use among themselves. Those that are older and have lived the demeaning uses against them of that term do not think that is an acceptable term to use at all. They feel it is going backwards after fighting hard to gain the freedom they have won.

Put it this way. Among a group of Protestants, someone once said: "You might find a group of Catholics criticising their priests. Don't join in, they'll get mad at you". Then the parallel was made with marriage: "I may criticise my wife, but don't you dare say a word against her!"
In other words, it is always less offensive to either criticise or make jokes about the group that you belong to, than to have an outsider do it.
In the same way, I may refer to myself as sometimes being hypocritical, or as being not too bright at times, or some other self-deprecating remark. But if you come along and call me a hypocrite, or not too bright, I would get offended.
Does that help explain?
EDIT:
I might make jokes criticising Canadians, and Canada as a country, taking potshots at our weaknesses. And I'd probably think I was funny. But if I ever heard a U.S. citizen making those same remarks, I would get pretty upset.

It has to do more with your relationship to black people. I started using the N word when I was 9 and I am white, but i have only ever used it because I was part of the community and that is the language we used. Honky was the white counterpart to that word. Of course I moved away a while back and don't use it now, cause I dont have a black posse that uses that word.

Its just not ok for ANYONE to use it- but some just know what the word really means or what it stood for back in the days. They feel impelled to call each other that as a form of homage, or friendly connotation. I think some get offended because what the word stands for.
In the end though- No one should use it.
It was an ignorant word made up by ignorant people and only ignorant people continue to use it to this day.

it has become slang, the word is used for fun (whether that's right or not), but white people(or people of any race other than black) can't use it because they are not black. it is like an inside joke between black people.
It is slang and white people have lost their right to use the word because of how their ancestors used it in the past.
white people: if you don't think that is fair, go suffer through hundreds of years of slavery, go get beat, rapped, murdered, and discriminated against because of the color of your skin, and then maybe you can come and talk to me about using the n-word. until then stop complaining and stop worrying about what other people call themselves !!

It is a double standard. It was process for AA to go through to dissensitize ourselves to that word, so we made it not sting so much by using it causually amongst ourselves. But now, sense it is a New time and era I'm all for dropping the word completely from vocabulary.

yes. It is a Double Standard. I have never understood it.I don't think I ever will. I mean, think of the last caucasion that called themself ,"Cracker." I have never heard it. I think it is a way of them obtaining attention and trying to maintain some sort of peculiar control. We are referring to an ethnic group that statisitics show commit more crime on their own race than any other race in population -at the moment...I don't think it is meant for me to understand...I will never be able to figure this out...
