Definitely sounds like they're trying to confuse you! :-) Think of it this way: First, think of it as 65 instead of 65% (it's the same as considering 65/100). Ten percent of 65 is 6.5 (or 6.5%). So you can then multiply 6.5 by 8, or you can add 6.5 together 8 times -- both give you 52. Or, if you want to do it a little more quickly, you can take 65 and multiply it by 0.8, which also gives you 52.

I've always had a problem with math, so I know sometimes it's helpful to know a couple of different ways to solve the problem in order to understand it.

52. Multiply the two numbers together and move the decimal two places to the left (they are both decimals... as in 80% is just .80, so remember your decimal).

If you have five percent of one hundred percent, you multiply five by one hundred and get five hundred and move the decimal two points to the left... you have five. Five percent of one hundred percent is five.

Five percent of eighty percent. Multiply five by eighty. Four hundred. Move your decimal, and you get Four.
