Depends on the computer, but many have that as an option. Some laptops allow you to put an extra battery in that slot, too. Check online for accessories on yoyr model.

Yes, you will need to get an adaptor from somewhere like CompUSA to have the hard drive fit. The hard drive, 3 1/2", is normally smaller the the 5 1/4" slot that the cd-rom is in. You would also then need to hook it up to the correct ribbon in the case, use the ribbon that the hard drive is hooked to. If you already have 2 hard drives in your computer and this will be the third then you will also need to get another hard drive controller.

Assuming this is a desktop.....
You can, but the CD bay will be too large to securely hold the smaller hard drive. You will want to purchase one of the hard drive mounting kits they make. You put the hard drive into the kit, and then it fixes properly into the CD size slot. Keeps it from rattling and getting damaged.

If it is a laptop....
Check the manufacturer's laptop. Most make enclosures that you can put a laptop hard drive into and then replace the CD drive with the enclosure. I have one I use regularly for doing laptop hard drive data recovery.

The third solution is to go with a USB drive.

Yep, you can pickup the adapters for about 20 bucks. You can also just rig it up in there, but please dont. It wont transfer heat very well.

Other options: You can also easily fit it in most floppy slots-though you cant use the floppy cable. Most computers have a spot for a second hdd if you dont already have one. External controllers arent expensive either, some of the 5.25 ones come with an adapter for a hdd.

Yes as long as it is compatible to your CPU. I have a CD/DVD-rom that is not right for my computer I have to go out and buy something to make it work. Warning Warning you can end up sticking more money into your CPU then you really need so write down all the information about your computer and go buy one that will work and make sure you get help cause it seems if you are in here asking this you will need help.

you can get a hard drive caddy that is the same size as a cdrom and uses the same cables. the hard drive just clicks into it. They are relatively cheap. pic here http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=23364&doy=5m3&C=SEO&U=strat15

or you can secure it inside the cabinet using brackets and cover up the space where you took the CDrom out with a clip on cover matching you case.

Yes, if your hard drive is 3.5 inches and the hole is for a 5.25 inch drive then you will have to get the brackets so that the 3.5 inch HDD will mount up in the hole.
