replace the fuel filter. it could be low fuel pressure that is causing the problem. with a full tank there is less air in the tank to expand as fuel is pumped out. a bad filter will cause fuel pressure to drop and this might be complicated by not having much air in the tank.

you might test this theory next time the light comes on. just pull over and remove the gas cap. you'll probably hear a whoosh of air. if this makes the light go out, you're on to something. this could also mean the the cap is bad if it is supposed to vent air into the tank. the cap would be a lot quicker to change and cost less than a fuel filter. good luck

Hmm after 26 years I thought I'd seen 'em all....Oh ya I dropped that one last week...

If it only goes off after the tank is opened than I would just take a guess that the venting of the tank is blocked maybe a little water froze in the line. Check all the lines out of the pump and gas tank checking them for cracks or cuts. I wouldn'r worry about the fuel filter as this sounds like the sealed recirculation isn' being alloed to vent to atmosphere when it needs to. Usually a charcoal canister in the engine compartment. A check of the system with an Analyzer you can borrow from autozone should nail the problem on the head it will tell you the cause.

I know this sounds crazy but don't fill the tank all the way up.
i have seen topping off teh fuel tank fills the charcoal canister (the device that absorbs gas fumes from your tank) with liquid fuel & blocks the flow of vapor to the engine & sensors etc...
if your light does finnaly go off thats whats happening.
