As people say, nylon strings are (generally) for classical/spanish acoustic guitars - put steel on those and goodbye guitar; the neck will bow and can break.. On other guitars then steel is what you need - if you put nylon on you will have no sustain and tonality. A reasonable guide is the string winding mechanism of the classical guitar.

Actually, steel is a pretty much generic term as lots of "steel" strings" are now coated or wound with bronze or phosphor-bronze etc.

Strings also come in different gauges or thicknesses depending on what you play. Lighter strings are best for finger-picking and heavier for strumming. Electric guitar strings tend to be strung lighter than acoustic.

Finally, a guitar is built for a certain string gauge. If you put strings on that are too light then you may get fret buzz but if you put strings on that are too heavy you could bow the neck of the guitar.

Nylon strings are better for finger picking (classical). Steel strings sound alot better.. However, your guitar-neck might warp over a long period of time due to the force of the steel strings, in comparison to the nylon.

Well Nylon strings are usually used on classical guitars as they have a much softer sound. Steel ones sound good on Acoustic guitars :)

I think the steel strings are for electric guitars and the nylon and gut strings for non electric guitars.

DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR PLAYING.IF YOUR PLAYING SOME CLASSICAL OR FLAMENCO THEN NYLON STRINGS. ANYTHING ELSE WOULD BE STEEL. IT ALSO DEPENDS ON WHAT KIND OF GUITAR. IF YOU HAVE A CLASSICAL GUITAR YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PUT NYLON STRINGS ON IT. WITH STEEL IT HAS TO MUCH TENSION AND COULD BOW THE NECK.

Nylon strings should only be used on Classical Guitars (that is what they are made for).

Steel...It holds in tune better, it has a more "true" guitar sound quality.

Nylon strings are for kids learning to play on their tender little fingers. If you're an adult and just learning to play, don't be a wimp! Get the steel strings!

If you are only starting to play, nylon is better, because, when you first start, lotsa practice is in order and steel hurts your fingers, but when you get into it,then steel is better.Much more clear, loud and vivid sound
