I'm getting a dryer free from my neighbours. It works but doesn't stop spinning. It goes through the entire cycle and gets stuck in cool-down (knob can be turned manually to reach the stopping point and stop the dryer). Is this something that can be fixed easily and inexpensively?

Depends on what you call inexpensive. It sounds like the timer is not moving if you have to advance it manually to the shut off position. Find out how much it would cost to replace the timer switch. The manual adjustment knob is part of the timer module
