How do you get the side keypad to work on the keyboard?

if you mean the numbers on the keyboard at the side then just press numlock button above the 7

Press the "Any" key. No, seriously the others are right there is a key that says Num Lock, usually located above the number 7. Depending on the type of computer, you may have to press it anytime you reboot the system.

push the num lock key on that side pad top row first key
