The cleaning of coins is never recommended for someone that is not highly skilled in the art of "Coin Conservation."
They don't even call it cleaning but rather conserving the coins. There are a few proffesional services you can send your coins to if they are relatively valuable and in need of conservation such as NCS, a diviosn of NGC of Sarasota, Florioda.
Cleaning coins in a harsh and abrasive manner removes metal from the surface which is never desirable, it usually flattens the coins luster if any and imparts harsh hairlines where cleaning has occurred.
There are many dealers and collectors that are quit trained in the use of special chemicals, baths and recoloring or dipping that can make a coin appear as though it were not cleaned.
