It's iron. Put a whole house filter between where it comes into the house and the tank. You'll have to change it every month or two but it's cheap and works. You won't drink it or get stains on everything. It also clogs the water heater and faucet screens if you don't filter it.

If she's on a well, there a centrifuge type attachments that can centrifuge out the rust. If she's on city, she need new pipes.

As for drinking, brushing teeth, and cooking, I'ld go with bottled, as ingested metals (rust) contribute to alzhiemers and other neurological disorders. Bathing and the like...more of a nusance than anything. (note" although iron is considered a nutrient, not in the form of metal bits, iron used be the body must be atom size not molecule size)

It could be worse, I've got some friends on the Georgia Florida border...they have sulpher water, perfectly harmless but the smell is aweful. Everything smells like bad eggs...ewwwww!

I don't know about health concerns and rust. My first house was built in 1904 and had galvanized steel pipes. These were rusting from the inside out and would get rust colored water if faucet not turned on for a while. I changed all steel pipes to copper.

That may not be her problem, but if pipes are a grayish color, that is probably it.

I've never heard of anyone suffering any damage from rusty water. Rust is just oxidized metal (iron) which is actually a necessary nutrient. Where does she get her water from? City supply or well-water?
