U.S.: states that recognize gay marriage:
New Jersey
Massachusetts

U.S. States that allow same-sex partnerships:
California
Connecticut
Vermont

BTW - You must live in one of those states for your marriage to be recognized. Federally you would still NOT be recognized as married. So during tax time your Fed. return would be filed single, but your state would be filed married.

Massachusetts,Vermont ,California ,Hawaii,New Jersey beginning February 19, 2007,Maine, and the District of Columbia. as a resident of Cali you are able to have a civil union not a real marriage but closes enough just go down to your local court house, but you can also register as a domestic partner being as the same sex and you will still have the same rights as being married. The fee for filing the Declaration of Domestic Partnership is $10.00.
** For same-sex partners, Family Code section 298 requires that an additional $23.00 fee be paid at the time of filing the form, for a total of $33.00. The additional $23.00 fee will be used to develop and support a training curriculum specific to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender domestic abuse support service providers who serve that community in regard to domestic violence, and to provide brochures specific to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender domestic abuse. Brochures developed by the Department of Health Services will be available upon request from the Secretary of State, as funding allows.

hope this gives you some insight and congrats to the both of you

Mass is the only state offering same sex marriage.

Some others offer domestic partnerships or civil unions, but not marriage.

I'd recommend going north to Canada.

Note that most other states will not recognize your marriage (from Mass or Canada), and the US federal government will not recognize it either.

I think Mass is the only state, but I would check out the residential requirements.
