Historically religion has played a major role in state and law making.

I think if we live in a multi-religious (and non religious) society there should be a separation....but where to begin?

Many theorists argue that religion was created as a basis of law. If we didn't have laws that mirrored or were similar to a religion we would have virtually no laws. There is no separation of church and state issue here. If we were to adpot say the 10 Commandments then we would have a problem.

Originally the church had more power, going to church was compulsory, they controlled all the schools, and still own vast pieces of land. so the church could control what laws were made on their land. Since then their power has reduced, but it seems that members have set their eyes on the white house.

How would that separate church and state.
