Sounds like an issue with the conmputer's IP address. When you switch between networks (your home and your friend) the IP address from the one network will not work on the other.

Click on Start and go to Run
Type in: cmd
In the window that appears typing: ipconfig /renew
This should release the IP address from the other network and allow it to grap a new one on the new network

It would depend on your friends setup . If you were trying to connect directly then without their account info you will not be able to surf. If they have a router then connect into any unused port and follow what ever the method used to add someone to their system, your computer my have to be authorized in the router before it will work.
Not knowing their setup and what you were doing these are only guesses.

If you used the network wizard, it turned on the windows firewall, the default is high to keep out hackers and also will prevent you from connecting to the network you just set up.....
Turn off the windows firewall or configure it to let you connect to the internet. Also, try restarting your pc......

I am going to assume you are running xp.

You have to make sure you are getting an IP address.

press [START] -> Run
type "cmd"
In the black box type "ipconfig" if there is no default gateway listed then you need to type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew"

if that doesn't work then there are a whole another set of issues... lol
