I think most of the US wouldn't even have known his name...... at least no more than you can name the mayor of Dallas, Chicago, Tampa, L.A., Denver, Detroit or San Diego off of the top of your head.

please, I am anything BUT a conspiracy theorist.. I am merely pointing out that he is no more or less qualified than he would have been without 9/11.. but rather that with that event he is now a presidential hopeful as opposed to just an ex-mayor.

Excellent question. Probably not. He's sure gotten a lot of mileage out of the TV face time as a result of 9/11.

Actually I think the answer would be yes. If not for 9/11 I do believe it is possible that Giuliani would have sought the Senate seat which Hillary now occupies. If he had won he would have possessed a platform from which to gain name recognition. The real question is would he have been as favorably viewed by so many in the country if not for 9/11 and the America's Mayor label it garnered him?

Hey Pip! You have a shot at the presidency, if you have the money, backing - more money, air time, make us think you can do the job, hidden all the skeletons in your closet, and so on..even if you haven't been in the military, even if you can't say Nuclear, even if you've...snorted, smoked, drank, cheated, lied, or been arrested.

It's all about who you know and how much doe. Oh, and you do need to be an American citizen. You can be a judge of any kind...if the right people want to make you a judge. The only criteria for being a judge is your willingness to sit at a bench that is offered to you.

I think he'd have a shot at it, but it would be a very long shot. Being the mayor of any major city could potentially spring board you into presidential politics, but he'd have been better off becoming governor first. His performance in the aftermath of 9/11, however, is making it easier to leapfrog that level of politics.

Same question could be asked about Hillary. Would anyone know who she was other than a lawyer if her husband was not an Ex-President. I disagree though, NYC is the largest city in the US, alot of TV is filmed there, and alot of times we are told the mayor's name. I have never lived in NYC, and am from the South, and can name several NYC Mayors in the recent past and present. From Koch to Bloomberg.

9/11 made him America's mayor, I could not credit his fame to anything else. He did do many great things for the city of New York prior to 9/11, but you're right, nationally-speaking, 9/11 made Giuliani the presidential candidate.

Well, it is a moot point, isn't it. He led the city through a difficult time, and managed affairs with a high degree of success. I think he deserves the national recognition. By the way, if it takes another 9/11 for me to name mayors of major cities, frankly i will pass. I learned the name of another major mayor, New Orleans, after a tragedy too, but his efforts were shockingly poor.

Exactly.Almost nobody
where I live had never heard of him before that day.

What's amazing is that he is considered a hero of some sort.
He spent hours roaming around the city looking for a place to set up a control center because he had insisted that New York's emergency command be set up in the WTC,even though he knew it was considered New York's top terrorist target.

Amazing.

"Where fame and fate meet is where greatness can be born". There is absolutely no way Giuliani would be considered for the highest office in this country without the terrible occurance of 9/11.

No.

Most of the country (especially those in the Red States) absolutely despises NYC and the east coast in general.

Given his personal issues and relatively liberal social positions (pro gay rights, pro gun control) there is NO way he would ever get any traction with bible belt conservatives without 9/11.
