really awful items - one a unit that was covered in mud/was wet/had a stench and the other girls tights which were described as excellent conditioned but arrived badly bobbled but with holes in too.

On both occasions contacted the seller to say that item was not as expected and got curt/unpleasant responses.. One eventually after several intimidating e-mails refunded - the other partially refunded..

Left negative feedback to first and got retaliatory feedback in response - yet I was always polite/had a legitmate complaint and felt the seller was aggressive.

So the second one I left neutral feedback as I had to leave something and still got neg feedback as a response!!??

Now I feel intimidated and like I cannot leave honest feedback as I will only have my own reputation (over 130 transactions and rest all very positive) tarnished.. what is the point in having a system like this if it is not arbitrated and vetted?

Are the feedback scores therefore really accurate?

People on ebay just want positive feedback, if you leave anything else they leave negative. Ebay has no control over that otherwise they would have tons of people complaining.

Yes, I've 100% positive feedback - But at a price!

I've had some rotten sellers and they certainly deserved bad feedback, but I've not been able to give them accurate feedback for fear of retaliatory negatives.

There are only two ways round this that I can think of, one is to leave the neg feedback anyway. You will get a negative feedback in return, but you post a comment to this, saying something like "Check the date & time - This is retaliation as I had to leave them a neg feedback!". That shouyld take the sting out of their feedback a bit.

The second is sneakier, but has recently been stopped by eBay! I was going to leave it until the 90th day after the transaction and then leave them negative feedback at the last minute, so they could not retaliate! Sadly, I read eBay now extends the deadline for feedback by a week if you post close to the end on the deadline.

Sorry, I wish I had a better answer, but I suppose any site that relies on feedback, doesn't want to get bogged down in people claiming and counter-claiming that their feedback was retailitory (although the time and date should establish who left the retailatory feedback)...

I suppose having the feeback arbitrated and policed would push up the costs, but I agree, it makes the feedback system unreliable, since many unhappy participants will not risk leaving feedback.

I wouldn't worry too much, just put an explanation against the negative feedback and suggest if people are unsure to contact you on your next listing. If you go into the community chat line on ebay, you will see this is a common problem. When buying, whilst I always like 100% feedback on sellers, if it isn't, I always read the feedback report for the negatives if I am really interested in the item.

I had a similar experience. What I bought wasn't entirely represented right. I took the blame for that since I misread the description but his photo wasn't the product. I gave the guy a neutral feedback and just said I should have read the description closer. The seller was very nasty towards me, left me negative feedback and nasty comments. Was a complete jerk durinig coorespondance. I let it go since it wasn't worth the irritation. If somebody talked to me face to face like that I would have hit him. Some people are just jerks when they don't have to talk face to face to people. I was severly soured towards Ebay over this and don't use it much anymore. My guess is 5% of the people on there are complete jerks, much like life. So you'll deal with that now and then. Not much Ebay can do about it.

There was once a way to challenge a negative comment. I've haven't been on ebay recently - but see if you can search their help and there might be a way to remove that negative comment especially if its clear taht you were not be purposly negative towards the seller. People don't want negative ratings cuz it makes it so much harder to sell their stuff. We've all been there. But good for you about being honest and don't let the negative feedback intimidate you.

I have has the same experience, you can complain to Ebay to have the feedback retracted and report missuse of the system, any honest Ebayer who looks at feedback reads the comments left, make sure you word your response to unfair feedback well, also wait to leave feedback until you have received yours then if you want to leave negative or neutral for bad service they cannot retaliate, if you have paid by Paypal and are not happy with the items you can always lodge a complaint with them

There is a way to have feedback removed !

Both you and the seller can come to mutual agreement through e-bays feedback forum and have the negative feedback removed, but bear in mind "mutual" agreement, means it requires active participation from both parties !

Also, e-bay is changing it`s feedback system this month, so people can check on illegitimate reasons for bad feedbacks !

My feed back is great, but when I left two negs, they didn't even bother to leave any for me, and these are still on my computer awaiting "feed back", I must have hit the head on the nail and they didn't like it too bad eh, e bay really cannot do much as they expect truth full answerer's, no accounting for cheats and liars eh.

Under certain circumstances ebay will retract bad feed back .. You have to send a report to them explain what has happened then tell them you got a full refund ..then its up to them..fingers crossed they will help you.. TOO many (alfa hotel) sellers give good sellers a bad name..good luck

I have often wondered this myself. It is awful that you can't be honest about things, those genuine people then get tarnished with the same brush. And everybody is entitled to their opinion and yours should have been acknowledged so as to warn others.
