A 3 year old cat is still growing. She may have just come into her "winter coat." Also, there is a term called "blowing the coat" which means the animal was freaked out and scared, and their fur comes out in chunks. It's nothing to be worried about, it's a defense mechanism.
Just watch her skin for any kind of rash or wound. If you do see one, take her to the vet immdiately!
A way you can deal with the excess hair, is to brush her more often with a cat brush.

A few reasons. Spring is on the way, and cats naturally shed more in spring time. Second, she may not be grooming as well as she used to. It's worth a chat w/the vet, because changes in grooming habits sometimes indicate underlying sickness.

Sometimes in the winter this happens to inside cats due to the humidity change with the heat on. If her skin has become dry, so will her hair. It will become brittle at the roots and fall out. If you live in a state where you run the heat, try a small humidifier to keep things cozy and not too dry.
Best of luck to you

Well, from what I was told you can contribute the shedding to the weather. Not sure where you live, but when the weather changes their hair gets confused. They get winter coats, then start to "sheet".
Another reason could be his diet. Sometimes shedding is due to something they are lacking in their diets. I would call your vet to be sure if it continues & worries you.

My dog doesn't shed much but this time of year she will shed her winter coat. It actually began with her a few days ago, do you think it's the same with your cat?
