In winter they circulate the warm air near the ceiling down to the floor level. In the summer they do the same thing but provide moving air which helps cool you down. Also if you open the window in the summer, they help the hot air trapped above the open window escape. I'm afraid Fordman is incorrect. Hot air always rises

In the winter time the fan moves the warm air of the ceiling downward into the center of the room the cold air rises at the perimeter of the room, in the summer the ceiling fan goes in reverse and sucks the cold air upwards into the fan and the warm air is forced downward at the room perimeter.

Yes. In the winter, have the fan blow the air down. This will move the warm air near the ceiling down to the floor. Since hot air wants to rise, you'll have to turn the speed up until you feel the warm air.

In the summer, have the fan blow the air upward. This will help the warm air rise and push the cooler air down.

they help with the heat by ciculating the heat around the room on low, in the summer they do the same thing just on high....

yes, the fan must be reversed in the winter, and it wont do it by itself, you must reverse it.
