It depends on what file format the original file is in. It might be a matter of having had a program installed on your machine that used that file type, and now you've uninstalled it so it can't open those files anymore. Or else you have various programs that could open the same file (eg: for an MP3, you might have four or five programs that can read it). Can't really help you without more details.

the easiest to explain is --> the answer by marco - yahoo
although it's actually because the machine is sometimes unable to recognize the file type (usually when it recognizes the file, windows will autorun one default software to load that file) and thus it needs you to find and locate a proper software to open that file. Or another possibility is that maybe you don't have any software installed in the machine that able to open the file, thus windows doesn't know what to do so it runs that box.

what i usually do is...you can go to the file properties (right click - properties) and check the file extension ( example of file extension: .mov, .psd, .mp3, .wav, etc. while some are easy to recognize, for example -- you must know that .mp3 can be opened by winamp, or .mov is for quicktime. If you find one extension that you can't recognise but you need to open that file, what i usually do is--> i go to yahoo and type in the file extension there, for example .mb and so i can find proper software that able to open that file, and if needed i can find and download the software

well usually this means you do not have the program necessary to view the item, or else it would open automatically. You need to find out what you are missing and download the program to your computer for it to work. Sometimes it is free, sometimes you need software that has to be bought...all depends.
