Psychological stress is in the mind as you say. It cannot have an effect unless you permit it. Physical stress is another thing.

It is very real and in fact does affect us in physical ways as well as psychological. We feel anxious, so our blood pressure can rise, heart rate rises, digestion decreases, we experience muscle tension because of an increase in lactic acid production in muscles. It usually develops in the upper neck and shoulder muscles and can cause headaches, nausea, fatigue, restlessness, loss of sleep and irritability. Stress is not always a bad thing as it helps our bodies with coping mechanisms, but there is a point where our bodies will give up and that results in a break down mentally, a heart attack, a stroke, high blood pressure etc.

No, stress is as real as our stressors. Studies have shown even people who don't feel like they are getting stressed about something still have physical and chemical changes indicating a strong reaction to a stressful situation. If it were all in our minds, we could get a better handle on our body's reaction.

Stress is the consequence of the way we live, and how we apprehend it. It has nothing to do with imagination except in case of some mental illnesses.
It's a reality of OWL ("our way of life"), stress does not exist in primitive tribes!

it is probably generated by the signals your body is giving to the brain. It starts with your body feeling physical strain, increased heart rate, leg and muscle pain, throbing, sweating, sore feet, headache. Because you are feeling crappy physically your brain evaluates this as stress mentally.
