Check for proper drivers and see if your sound card is disabled by looking in device manager of the control panel. If your speakers are not powered by on board amplification the you could have a bad ac adapter or the speakers themselves could be defective. Hope this helps you out.

You should check the sound card drivers. If you have Windows XP, right-click "My Computer", select "properties", select "Hardware", and "Device Manager". Click the "+" sign on "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers". If you see a red or yellow mark here, chances are the drivers need to be reloaded onto the computer. You may need to find who manufactures the sound card, and get the drivers from their website.
