I don't know if this is what he is, but I've been seeing them for sale more recently: http://www.scotcat.com/bagridae/mystus_leucophasis4.htm These are giant upside down cats, and they are fairly aggressive. The spots are more gold than white on older fish. I have 2 that are about 7".

I know there's one Synodontis that's black with white spots as well: http://www.scotcat.com/mochokidae/s_angelicus9.htm

If these aren't him, here's another website with more catfish photos: http://www.scotcat.com/

Hope you find out what he is!

ADDITION: another possibilty - these aren't really known to be aggressive, but you might have an exception: http://www.centralpets.com/animals/fish/freshwater_fish/fwf4494.html

got a picture? Sounds like a pictus catfish. Could be a synodonis catfish too perhaps. That's an African species. I don't know though I am just taking a stab at it. I can't really tell you with out a photo.

Baby catfish will kill other fish when in a holding tank together, I had such experiences on the farm with blue channel catfish, they attack the other fishes eyes by hitting them with their sharp spike on their side fin and kill them by doing it. They will even kill each other. It sounds like a blue channel catfish to me.

It's probably an african catfish such as synodontis angelicus (which are black with white polka dots and highly territorial). They have low tolerance for other scavengers and are aggressive enough to deal with them accordingly.

does he have whiskers? or a sucker mouth or normal mouth?

have a look at the site below in the cat-e-log, see if there's anything that looks similar.
he doesn't sound like the kind of fish that should be in the coldwater goldfish, and plecs shouldn't be in with goldfish/koi either.
