Hello,
I am a white American woman living in Ghana and have been for 3+ years. While I do live with my family, I find Ghana to be exceedingly safe. It's schools would welcome someone from abroad to come and teach. I am sure you would enjoy it.
Today is Ghana's 50th Independence Day, and the country is wild with patriotism and happiness. It really is a wonderful place.

peter k is an ignoratn bigot, look at his other answers to Africa questions...some people! Anyway, I went to Ghana last year with an NGO and taught and travled, but mostly in groups. I loved it so much I'll be returning this summer. I would suggest that you teach through some sort of reputable organisation and that if you live totally alone you make sure that you're living in a nice part of town. Ghana is pretty safe, but if you're white you will be an obvious 'I have money mark' so some may try to take advantage of that or always ask you for money. The country and people are wonderful though, I prefer village life over the big cities (especially villages in the Volta Region!)

Will you let your gender restrict your movement? Even if you want to go to Iran (if you are an American),will you let recent issues disrupt that?
Ghana is one of the safest destinations in Africa but that makes it vulnerable to petty crimes from foreigners from neighboring West African countries. There's no place like home and thus, life in Ghana cannot be the same as the life you have in your home country.Hustlers (freeloaders or fraudsters) are everywhere, even the US with lots of employment opportunities have hustlers moving about. So don't be surprise that you will find lots in Ghana. There are lots of decent jobs for foreigners if you don't want government affiliated job.
check out these schools, they are foreign owned:

Democracy is very vibrant in Ghana than the US.You be the judge when you get there.

I would think very carefully about going there, or anywhere in Africa as a woman alone. If you have company then it wouldn't be so bad.
Why not try VSO?
The only experience I have had with folk from Ghana is not positive. I know it is wrong to generalise, but the people I had experience with told humungous lies, were not trustworthy and did not have a positive attitude to work. But these were immigrants to the UK, not in their natural environment.
A lot of internet scamming comes from Ghana.
I have not actually been there, however.
