So, I need to take three days off next week -- less than the traditional two weeks required to get vacation days approved. It's for a reason I don't really want to tell my boss (grad school interviews -- they have no idea I'm planning on quitting in the next six months). What's the best thing to tell them to get the time off?

Ideas that have been given to me so far:

My dad (who lives out of state) is having surgery and needs help.
My boyfriend surprised me with short-notice plane tickets somewhere.
Best friend's doing a shotgun wedding.
Wait until right before and say someone died.

The short answer is, you lie and say you're sick. I call it the "necessary lies in life" because there is no other alternative, plus, everyone does it. Way back at my first job I had an interview with another company but didn't know what to say to take the day off. I asked someone I knew who's a middle manager. He just put jis hand over his mouth and coughed twice, "I'm sick today! Bye!" He said everyone does it and not to feel guilty. Hypothetically, you get into grad school and you hand in your notice, your manager isn't going to sit there and figure out you lied about being sick for 3 days over 6 months ago. He/she probably did it himself during his career (several times!) Everyone does it.

The only possible problem may be that some companies request a doctor's note if you are sick 3 consecutive days or longer. But if it's a professional job, they never request that. It's only blue collar, union style workplaces that demand that.

Um the death and the surgery don't sound to good. I mean what if he or she finds out that it wasn't true? Maybe you should just call in sick or use the plane tickets one.

Good Luck in Grad School.

The best thing to do is to tell the truth. Just tell them something personal has come up and you have to have the time off to deal with it and if they want to know what it is just say it's so personal I had rather not discuss it with you.

Tell him medical appointments/surgery for a female problem. I bet you won't get questioned...that is, if your boss is a guy.
