Hi UK builder here, we correct a lot of this type of issue, as others suggest nails are a No! No! on stairs that creak, as they don't pull back the timber as screws do, and so in most cases the creak still remains after remedial nailing. Talc does work as does spray oil with a tube (WD40) but these are all temporary quick fixes, try screwing next to the nails so as to tighten up the treads. Good Luck.

Creaky stairs, nightmare when i try to sneak in after a good night out. The way to sort it is to gain access to the under side of the stairs and use wedges & screws on the stair risers. This will pull all the wood together and stop the squeaking. The squeaking is due to minor movement of the stairs over a period of time. People normally put up with the odd squeak because of the hassle involved in getting in under the stairs. Good luck, beat the squeak.

Try to screw them down instead. The nails are probably what is making the creaking noise. The screws will hold the boards more securely and stop the creaking.

the only way to stop stairs creaking is to reglue the wedges ..these are fitted from behind the stairs ..some times they shrink ..some times they just move ..you have to remove the back of the stairs to do this ..this is usualy made of plasterboard ..and it must be replaced for fire protection

Instead of nailing them try screwing them with properly shanked screws
