I get bad migranes with the pill. I was told that an IUD is my last option. What do I need to know before making a decision?

you need to talk to your doc about it first. IUD's can be a great choice, but they're certainly not your ONLY choice. There are various barrier mathods avaliavle as well, not to mention pills with lower hormone levels.

It is recommended that you have had at least one child before having an IUD.......but not for the reasons the previous poster has said. A woman who hasn't had a child is more likely to expel the IUD. I check my own IUD every month by feeling the strings to make sure it is in place. I have the Mirena IUD and love it. The pill made me a very unhappy person. I have had no issues with the IUD..........I no longer have heavy painful periods.

IUDs are not recommended for women who have never given birth because your uterus will be smaller and they can damage the uterine wall. They can cause internal bleeding from moving around inside the uterus and must be checked by a gynecologist every 6 months to a year to make sure it is still in place. If the IUD moves inside you without your knowledge you can get pregnant but the IUD will cause a spontaneous abortion. Some women are allergic to copper IUDs so you would have to investigate that before making a final decision.
