It was Venus Williams but I read that Brenda Schultz-McCarthy won the record back.

Everybody else is wrong. The people they talked about can all serve very fast though. The recorded fastest serve on the women's side goes to Brenda Schultz-McCarthy (130 mph). Second is Venus Williams at 127 mph.
Check out this page on wikipedia (scroll to the bottom). This will give you a list of the best servers over the years.

If the link doesn't work go onto wikipedia and type in serve.

Navratilova's serve was actually not very fast at all. Neither was Graf's. They were just well placed (like Sampras' in relation to Roddick's, for instance). Venus and Serena have always had the consistently fastest serves in the business, along with Brenda Schultz, who was sort of the Ivo Karlovic of her day.
Serena is the owner of the best serve in women's tennis, though. It's placed well, whereas Venus and Sharapova sometimes seem to not know where their serves are going. Also look out for this Nicole Vaidisova. She was serving some rockets at the Australian Open.

Brenda Shultz-McCarthy and Venus Williams. They have the 1 and 2 spot for the fastest serve.

Serena and venus williams. Venus's serve is faster but serenas is more consistent. Sharapova, Mauresmo, and Henin-Hardenne all have pretty fast serves too. I think the fastest serve ever was a 127 mph serve by Venus Williams!

In their primes, it would be between Navratilova and Graf...In present day, its probably between Sharapova, Serena, and Mauresmo...
Kowtow...You might be too young to even remember Navratilova...She had a serve that would blow past most men...She was also the strongest woman ever on the tour...
