It depends if its new or used your going for.
New it has to be the citroen c5 diesel especially estate. Great mechanicals. You may even pick a decent one up second hand.

Cheaper car, either as others have said the mondeo or 406 diesel.

The octavia although a good car has proved to have gearbox problems in taxis.

depends on what type of work you are looking to do . Private hire or hackney. Then you need to speak to the council to find out what their local rules are . for example hackneys may need to be black cabs or a certain colour, or even the amount of seat space available to each paying passenger , When you have these details check your area to see what operators are using. then the choice is down to you , in days long ago i did specialist contract and hotel work using Mercedes but equally i have seen people use Ladas to make a living !

Take a look round and ask the drivers. When ever I've asked I always get told Peugeot 406 HDi or Skoda Octavia.

Skoda Octavia or Toyota Avensis, both with plenty of space & reliable mechanically. Diesel, of course.

(Or, for minicabbing, 20 year old orange Datsun with bald tyres and 10 airfresheners to cover the oil fumes, plus prolapsed upholstery!)

MPV or people carrier, that's what I have to use for taxi-ing my family about. I've got an Espace, with 7 seats, ideal for ferrying my family of 6, plus take a back seat out for luggage.

Checker Marathon. King of the road when it comes to taxis. Unfortunately, no longer in business but used Checkers can be found. That said, a full size Chevrolet Impala or Ford LTD are good vehicles.
