The idea that people sitting on their butts not working while living in FEMA trailers for free is a crock of sh**. My friend was displaced because of Katrina; owned her home free and clear, was not given any handouts from the government and is down there right now trying to figure out what the government is going to do in her neighborhood (lower ninth ward). She still pays taxes on the property that she hasn't lived in since Katrina, works out of state where she is trying to get her life back and move back home where she has lived for over 40 years. The time period is up on the freebies in the FEMA trailers and they have to pay taxes on the trailers, the land they sit on (even though it is still owned by the government) and if they owned property before the hurricane, pay taxes on it or lose it to the government. The runaround these people are getting is rediculous. Some of you judgemental people that have answered this question need to see the pain in my friend's eyes and the crack in her voice of having a piece of the american dream then have NOTHING but the clothes on her back when she came here to Ohio. LONG WAY FROM LOUISIANNA don't you think? Try cramming 3, 4, 5 families into a 2 bedroom TRAILER and make it work. My how we judge handouts, as you seem to think. She now has to have her home demolished, rebuilt with her own money (mind you her home was bought and paid for in full) and wait somemore on the government to reimburse her. Contractors to come from Florida, Texas, or California.....see any connection there????? Or are some people so blind to the truth...this is just some food for thought before you rest your head tonite......

In spite of the severity of the aftermath...I can understand why there are some still on assistance from FEMA and other gov't resources...There were soooo many scams from others that took the money and ran and also insurance companies came up short on their parts too as far as coverage goes, there are a lot of cases pending still in the courts over those issues...Can you imagine how long it would take to find all those scammers? And I mean a possible tens of thousands of 'em!! The gov't lost a lot of monies because of this upheaval !!!! This plays a big part as to why the progress is slow there.
For those of you here that say they need to find work and move on...well you obviously haven't been there to see the aftermath, so how the heck can you tell what it is really like there?! I worked as a volunteer there in 2005 and found so many devastated communities (wards south of the quarters) that even caused ALL KINDS of employers to leave the areas!!! when I was down there, it was indescribable as to what the extent of losses were. A big man like me actually cried at some scenes, imagine the people that were washed out to the seas and never found or heard from again. Or imagine seeing a damaged toy doll in a pile of debris that doesn't even have a little girl to play with it.....you morons are insensitive enough to think that all should be done by now!
So yes, jobs are limited for a while longer. Look at how long it took to build this city in its history to begin with.

but to answer the question.....I truly think to this day that it is really sad that there are those that still have to rely on FEMA housings...still.
Thanks to the crooks and looters! ( that includes insurers, housing contractors and the rest of 'em!! ).

these people have relied on the government their whole entire lives. they have put themselves in that situation. just like most innercity students are doing for themselves today by taking education for granted and taking the same path their mother took. then when they do grow up they will complain that the government didn't do much for them when they too are in the same situation as these New Olreans "victim" dwellers.

so it's expected of these people to continue to live in FEMA housing. what are they to do but rely on the government. most of them can't read beyond 5th grade level, are lazy, and some are even convicted criminals.

i'm not surprised at all.

I feel we should still be helping the people that can't help themselves. I also see that the goverment hasn't really done enough for the people who truly do need help.Unfornatatley there will always be the leeches that want something for nothing. If they don't get a job, because there are no jobs then they need to relocate. I am sure its not easy but its a start, instead of just sitting on their butts.

Boy the people who seem to have the most say about this question have got to be the sorriest sack of human beings I have ever seen! just go get a job, hey? Have any of you actually stopped by and saw New Orleans after this happened? It looked like a nuclear bomb hit! That's like telling the rest of the country to "forget" about September 11 . . . nearly as many people were killed in Katrina & Rita as were killed in New York. Oh, I forgot, that's rich northerners, and their lives are worth more!

God help any of you if you ever have to find out what living in the wake of any real disaster is like! I'll wager that might humble you a bit. And I hope if you do, your fellow man has mroe charity towards you than you seem to towards other people. No wonder you guys can't win in Iraq . . . what they say about you Americans is all true . . . you're just so bloody selfish you can't think of anyone or anything other than yourselves even when its your own people who need the help! You really are the most selfish and unkind people on the planet! Yeesh!

unless elderly or disabled i think it's past time to stop whining and get on with it. anybody with a shred of ambition and self worth has gotten a job and a new home. how long they gonna play the victim card? it gets old. if you're not elderly or disabled and you're still sukkin' off FEMA you are a bum!

Those that were living in a local state park up until a few months ago were driving new Hummers. Now, I don't know how many people who are working can afford to drive a new Hummer, but if someone living on handouts can, they are getting way too much. Why should they bother to get started again when they get so much for doing nothing?
