I had purchased an unit of this model of laptop on 13/8/06. Less than 1yr on, my laptop has broken down 3times. I had filed a complaint letter but their personnel who called me failed to give me a satisfying answer. Their customer service representative even said that the first two times(as their rep said it was due to corrupted software) it broke down it was due to the user's fault. This time round, the broke down was due to a hardware problem. Am i in any position to demand for an exchange?

I got my HP in 1/06 and had it break down twice this year. I guess I had better luck with the support folks than you. (Actually, I had *three* encounters with support folks, but only two were breakdown related.) This is all to say, try "chat" sessions instead of "snail mail" or phone (if *that* is any encouragement...). I actually found them *very* cooperative. In case you're curious:

(1) I ordered with one extra 12-cell. Received 6 by mistake. Called for help; prompt response.
(2) 512 memory failed (I had to rebuild, re-install...grrr). Prompt response, shipment of replacement card
(3) Overheating, failure of fan plus cpu plus memory plus hard drive (though data recoverable); still under warranty; prompt response: they shipped box for pre-paid shipment; repair and return within one week (though again I had to reinstall all *my* software...grrr)

I can't say the laptop itself has impressed me as being as robust as my other, an IBM that has endured over 2 years (and as so reported by PC magazine). But I was at least pleased with HP's responsiveness in their "live chat".

Usually, most sellers will only exchange for a couple of weeks. For the rest of the warranty, you can expect a repair or swap for a refurbished unit.

The seller is responsible (in the UK) so go back to the seller and don't take any rubbish about it being the manufacturers responsibility. Your contract is with the seller.
