My suggestion would be a paper looking at the Black Hills Gold Rush which in all likelihood set into motion the final settling of the wild west and all its many tragedies associated with it. The discovery opened the way for the railroads, ranchers and settlers, but it came with a human price.

omg!!! do the JFK assassination!!! Argue against the Warren Commsion!!! You would have so much fun finding all the primary source documents (which are bountiful) and there is a lot to write...easily takes up 8-10 pages if not more!!

the most interesting topic to me would be the issue of industrialism from the end of Reconstruction through the end of the 19th Century. Talk about Carnegie, Rockefeller, and how the exploitation of workers shaped the future of labor unions, etc.
