littleone,

If your friend has a family history of blood clots, has she been tested for a hypercoagable blood disorder? I'm assuming that she'll have at least one clotting disorder. This being said, she really should still be on some type of blood thinner (anticoagulant). Warfarin is harmful if not fatal to unborn babies. She would have to give herself Lovenox shots twice a day.

What state is she in? Find a good hemotologist or rheumatologist to get tested. After the test results, she should ask about being on anticoagulants, and she needs to tell him/her that she wants to get pregnant.

She also needs to find a high risk OB if she is trying to conceive.

She needs to be sensitive to her body, and to pick up on early warning signs of clots.

Keep a symptom journal, and graph symptoms monthly.

If her labs come up positive, she should be wearing a Medic Alert Bracelet. I wear mine from www.medicalert.org They have a nice selection, and have 24 hr. protection.

Check out www.apsfa.org It's a site for a blood clotting disorder where she can find all sorts of info. There's also a support group she can join to ask people questions.

I have a clotting disorder, and it too nearly took my life with a pulmonary emboli. Feel free to email me.

God Bless,
Chris

She needs to speak to the gp before concieving. He/she may be able to advise her properly on the risks. Im sure she will be fine having a baby, but will probably just need a closer eye being kept on her during her pregnancy by the midwife, and maybe a different anticoagulant given instead of warfarin to prevent further clots whilst pregnant.
Tell her to seek advise, but I cant see anyone telling her that she shouldn't have another baby.

I suggest she gets advice before she tries for another baby. A clot on the lung is life threatening.

Each case is individual really. She's best talking to her doctor who will help her to assess the risks and would be able to monitor her and perhaps put her on drugs before when signs of any problems occur thus preventing them from fully occurring.

Statistically she is as risk in view of her past medical history and her family history.
Pregnancy also increases the risk of clots.
I suggest she has a consultation with her Gp to discuss all her options.
