I'll only be using this for net surfing, excel and multimedia. In particular I want to be sure the processor is adequate and will not require upgrading in the next two years or so. The alternative to this processor is the "AMD® Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL50" is this worth £35?

Dell InspironTM 1501
AMD® Turion 64 Mobile Technology MK36
15.4" Widescreen Truelife screen
1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
80GB Hard drive

Thanks in advance for your answers, I'm stumped with this as it's my first laptop!

Vista comes preloaded but I'm going to specifically request XP.

By multimedia I just mean watching DVDs and surfing youtube etc.

It sounds okay.
Just okay.
Personally I don't like Dell. If you want a laptop, try Acer.

Also, notebooks to stay away from...
Compaq
HP
Gateway
Dell

I don't mean to say that these are crap. But these are the laptops that people bring me for fixing cause they're acting up.
but the notebook you're looking at sounds pretty good, just don't expect to do some heavy gaming on it.

hi, no longer something incorrect with the gadget specifications, I merely offered a sparkling computer/Gateway with highly a lot similar specifications, except I have a bg on the spot card and mk 40 amd turion, yet nevertheless a dang sturdy purchase i spengt like $749.00 i might want to opt for to characteristic on your question you reported you imagine its a sturdy deal for a ordinary computer? a million gig memory etc.. is little more desirable than ordinary . yet i might want to say sturdy purchase bypass for it... besides the undeniable fact that i'm no longer a huge dell fan. also if it has IE.7 perinstalled as maximum dell structures do i might want to srngly recomend having her to regulate it to IE 6 , version 7 has alot of topics that counteracts with mistakes with yahoo messnger and many different courses that require internet useage for updates etc.. isn't properly suitable with IE 7. for further data visit micorsoft web site and comments etc..

it's 'loaded' vista right

surfing, excel > ok
multimedia > no

checkout the inspirion e1505, much better !
_____________

well, i never knew they still supported xp
in that case, get the win xp media centre 2005 with sp2

get the best processor u can afford, it's heart of system
so i guess the tl50 should be a must !
it's distinctly superior to the mk36

rest of specs are cool !
and ya, don't forget to order the recovery disks
