No web site, but I can't understand why not either. Effects do not last as long as 2 drinks, tax on it would make BILLIONS of dollars, and 3/4 of the American people would not be criminals.

I apologize that I have no links on it, but one of the big reasons is because you can't really regulate the sales and distribution of Mary Jane. With alcohol, the fermentation process can be put under scrutiny, the books can checked and balanced by the SEC, and money can be made. The biggest concern with pot is simply that you really can't keep all the economics and revenue in check , b/c anyone can sell or hold, or grow it at any time, and there is nothing that can be done to place restrictive measures on it where they can effectively monitor the finances involved in the same turn. There are some in the government that believe that it is very bad for you, but I guarantee you it's not the majority of them, the true problem lies with economics. Keeping it illegal ensures that there will be some money coming in for violations of the law, but this could not be effectively regulated if they decided let's legalize it.

Marijuana prohibition started shortly after the end of alcohol prohibition. You see we had all these government agents who would soon be out of a job, so the government needed to find something for them to do. It dawned on them that only brown skined folks were using pot so it was convenient to criminalize it, this also had the added benefit of taking away their vote by making them felons. Only during the 60's when large numbers of white middle class kids started smoking pot were reforms undertaken. The federal government still has too many people on the payroll (DEA, prison employees, court staff, councilors, etc) to take the logical step of legalization. It says something about this policy that it is easier for a 12 year old to get a joint than it is to get a can of beer. Or as Lincoln said during the Douglass debates "Prohibition seeks to make criminal that which is not"

#1 because they havent found a way to be able to tax it yet since people can grow it at home. Tabacco is more harmful and far more addictive but yet because a tabacco plant is so large people are not going to grow it at home to smoke and you dont get tabacco seeds when you buy a pack.
#2 the government makes far to much money from drug busts to want to make it legal. Billions and billions of dollars are collected at drug busts along with all the property that the people have. If you dont believe me on that check out the some of the auctions held by the government of all the property that is seized. Were talking speed boats , private jets, homes , furniture, jewelry , cars , etc .
Its all about the money. If it werent then alcohol would be ilegal and tabacco. I have yet heard of someone developing cancer from second hand weed smoke or families being wiped out by a driver under the influence of weed. Pot heads do not go out driving cars when they are stoned. You will find them stuck on a couch somewhere munching on anything they can get thier hands on but on the other hand drunks always want to drive , they know before they start drinking that they shouldnt drive but yet they drive to a bar or to a party and try to drive back home. I also have never ever heard of a pot head getting into a bar room fight or any fight for all that goes. They are to busy laughing at everything. Yet drunks can get really violent.
When it comes to legalizing weed it wont happen until they can figure out how to get thier cut just like prostitution. They only reason why it is illegal is because the gov. hasnt figured out how to get thier cut from the money these girls make. Look at what they have done to even waitresses and thier tips. They figured out how to get in on that money too. It all has to do with tax dollars. Its amazing how many times one dollar gets taxed after it leaves the printing place. Every hand it goes thru has to pay taxes on it some how. Sorry I dont have any web sites to send you to. The above is not bull either. Its common sense.

Let me brake it down for you because I have heard some really BAD answers for this question in the past.

The reason is politics.

If a candidate campagins on the fact that they want to legalize marijuana, all the conservatives will loose thier frigging minds and that person will never get elected.

Most conservative people in the US are afraid of legalizing marijuana and they would not support it being legalized. Can't you picture the slander now? FOX NEWS running a neverending storyline about how that candidate hates america and is nothing but a drug addict.

That is the truth.. It would be political suicide to support legalization of marijuana..

What would all the drug lords do if the gov't legalized?
They would send all their thugs to our Congressmen's houses on a vengeful, murderous rampage.
They almost DID that when we repealed alcohol prohibition! Organized crime has our lawmakers by the balls.

Also there's a lot of "legitimate" money in prohibition.
Seizure of assets, prison industry, drug testing industry.

Are you aware of the biggest crusader against cannabis, Harry Anslinger?
He once said this:
“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”

Because of the mind altering properties of the THC. I don't have websites but this is why if you arguing for it just site the mind altering affects of alcohol are far greater. Personally I don't puff but I could care less if it were legal in fact I see FAR more reasons it should be than shouldn't be.

The real answer is simply it will wreck your economy - which is heavily based on the concept (and morality) of "working hard for your pleasures", instead of getting all the pleasure and relaxation and contentment in the world - for next to nothing - or simply growing (all the relaxation pleasure and contentment in the world) in the attic.

Marijuana therefor - is seen in high places as the great "economy f*ck"- and no heavily taxed substance is worth throwing a whole economy away for..

Personally I think they won't ever legalize pot because of one simple fact. If legalized they would tax it and control it's production. Pot is so easy to grow in a multitude of climates and conditions that the control the government would seek would be almost impossible to attain.

because the government makes too much money off the failing war on drugs. and also, most of our jails are filled w/first time drug offenders. so where would the prison gaurds go? the people who build the prisons would be outta business. the people who supply everything in the prison (washer, dryer, towles) would be outta buisness. and they wait for dealers to make a lot of money, and then they go in and take it all!
