At that age kids are fine tuning some of their motor skills. They are also improving their walking and basic reading skills. I found a great toy site (Earlyears) that describes the developmental milestones at that age. Also on this site next to the milestones is one of my favorite toys for this age. Squeak E Mouse. It is a mouse that your child can dress and undress while practicing different fine motor skills working with buttons, zips, etc... Another favorite for that age is a shape sorter made by Chicco. This shape sorter helps fine tune motor skills because it has keys to get the pieces out (keys are perfect for that age). A good musical toy for that age is the Mozart music cube. Your child can experiment with music (which they usually love at that age). Also it goes without saying that board books that expose them to more reading are always good. Below are sites for the stuff I talked about above. Good luck!! :)

Vtech toys, Leapfrog, and Baby Einstein are all good choices.
Look for toys that are in your baby's age range so it appropriately teaches your child what it should be learning without being something that could harm your child (like something for older children with little pieces).

For the 1 yr old I would recommend toys that encourage maths and literacy (you can get these at an Early Learning Center). Make education fun, and read as much as you can to your child. Also classical music is meant to help with babies you can buy CD's espeically designed for babies. Check out my sources for more info on the above

Intelligence is something that can be stimulated and encouraged but there is nothing that you can do to raise your child's inherent level of intelligence.
If you are looking for toys to stimulate your child's intelligence I recommend the Baby Einstein videos and the LeapFrog line of toys.
