i have seen 3 extremely overweight kids in the paper in the last week-each of them pictured with overly proud looking parents.
Why are these parents so proud and happy to have their kids be the laughing stock of the nation.
If i were the parents of the kids i would be ashamed of myself for letting them get so big and unhealthy and protecting the from the media circus that surrounds the story.
What do you think of it all?

it response to smp1969, each child has probably done something that has made mum proud, but these children are in the paper because of what they eat-one mother even admitted that she lets the her daughter eat because of the aguments if she doesnt.
as a mother i would be so ashamed of myself for letting my child get to that size.
children only learn healthy eating at home-everything the schools do is futile if parents dont support it.
i personally would pose for a picture that would be spread across the nationals, i would be doing everything i could to make sure my children live a long and healthy life, so that i dont have to organise their funeral 20 years from now.
this is a subject close to my heart as i lost a friend aged 22 to obesity.

I didn't see any proud looking parents, but you hit the nail on the head "media circus". Is it a crisis that the papers have found 3 way-too heavy kids? It's a Social Work issue to sort out - leave them to it and lets get back to important issues.

I didn't see anyone acting the way you described...maybe you seen some I didn't....if you did, as a mother I would think they looked at their children with pride because a parent often does not see what the rest of the world does.....we are blinded with love.
I do think some changes are in order though....

They're probably not smiling because they are proud, it's because the kid has bad wind from all the crap they have been eating. Admit it, if a family member farts, it makes you smile. the kid probably let one go just as the picture was being taken. Hence the smiling parent.

I think they're just proud of their children, as their parents but I agree that theres nothing to feel proud about when it comes to failing to promote your child to eat healthy.

yes i saw it and there was also a story from his father saying it was his fault as he turned to food for comfort when he saw his dad beating up his mum,it`s just really sad that children go through this.I can relate a bit as i tend to comfort eat myself when i`m stressed or down in the dumps but wouldn`t let myself get to those extremes and if i saw my child doing the same i`d get help as soon as.

I think obesity in children is a horrible trend which is going to have long-lasting effects.
As to these parents--how could they not be proud? I don't quantify my love for my child due to his/her weight. I sincerely hope you don't either. These children did something worthy of kudos to get their picture in the paper and should be lauded for their accomplishment, do you think they should not have been acknowledged due to their weight?

I agree with you here in the UK they should be locked up for child abuse, there is tons of evidence to support it, after all some dog owners were taken to court and faced jail for letting their dog get overweight, the parents are ruining their lives and slowly killing them..
