I have a black molly (type of goldfish), who has been okay up until a week ago. It seems as though he can't keep himself the right way up, and is basically swimming on his back! He is eating, and although spends a lot of time resting at the bottom of his tank, does swim around! I have cleaned his tank, I even took him out of it, but he seemed to get worse. The filter is fine, and I feed him tetra fin pellets, alternated with blood worms! Can any one help me ...!

You need to treat it as It sounds like he has swim bladder disease! You can get the medication from any good pet-shop or the local aquarium shop where you bought the fish! If you have a filter remember to take out the carbon before treatment, otherwise it will remove the medication before it has time to work!
Be prepared to lose the fish though, especially if it's a small tank! as all goldfish are prone to problems caused by stunting! They appear to stop growing but internal organs don't and press on each other! Swim bladder problems like this are usually the first sign of trouble!

Tetra foods are not the best. Try something without corn in it. Floating upside down can come from 3 things in this order (my opinion) #1 Rancid (old) Food. change food out once a month, and avoid flake foods. #2 High nitrates, so take a reading and if they are over 40 ppm change water. #3 Swim bladder disorder. You must rule out #1 and #2 it could be both of those things together. Don't medicate the tank 9 times out of 10 you do much more harm than good tossing random meds into the tank. Water quality and good food are the two main things on keeping GF healthy. If you have any disease breakout start with a water and food change. The frozen blood worms are a good choice, the dry food will have to change. Corn gluten meal cannot be digested by GF so it just comes out and rots in the tank spoiling the water faster. Its a cheap filler and indicates low quality food. HBH makes a good food called Super Soft and it comes in spirolina and seafood. It for tropical fish but GF will thrive on it. If you can't find it at your local retailer look for a food that has a list of seafood esp. the first listed ingredients - should be fish meal, krill, salmon, shrimp, spirolina, kelp, ect. Protien should be min 30% and fat around 10%. Toss it out once a month, BC who would eat left over seafood after it sits out for a month? Try also frozen brine shrimp, helps keep the intestines clean. The frozen stuff will last in the freezer its just the dry food you have to really worry about. Check the packaging before you buy it too. If its been opened or its not completely sealed don't buy it. You can also feed them banana, orange (out of the skin) broccoli, spinach, peas (out of skin), romaine lettuce, human grade seafood (shrimp, crab & immiatation crab, salmon, tuna) basically anything healthy and clean they can eat. Start with a good water change, then fast the fellow for about 3 or 4 days. If he rights himself then you know its the food. Then for about a week feed him only frozen brine shrimp and peas once a day. He should straiten out.

It may have some sort of disease. There are treatments you can add to the water for the different types, and though they don't always save the fish, it's worth a try if you are particularly attached to the fish. Go to a pet store and they will tell you which treatment would be best. Molly's are generally quite hardy, but if it's been like this for a week, well, any fish can put up with only so much stress...

what you have is a condition that could be Bloat. The swim bladder isn't functioning properly. This is probably cause you feed blood worms. Blood worms are high in protein and the fish is unable to digest it properly thus causing the expel of air to not function. The most common when a fish eats too much proteins in the dietary feedings. Many things in todays fish feed is high in proteins. I don't know how to cure it. You'd have to go to ask TFG. Linked to www.txholeyrocks.com web site.

Sorry to tell you this but i think your fish is about to die if it doesn't die maby its getting too old.make sure that it has the type of water it needs and a clean tank maby the food is making it act that way.My goldfish last a long time eating Wardly Essentials Goldfish Flakes but there is also a possibility that it might be lonely or wants a mate and one thing,DONT TAKE IT OUT OF THE TANK YOUR KILLING IT WITH AIR!
